Akiptan is pleased to announce that we were recently awarded a $3 million gift from
Yield Giving, MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropic organization. This award will enable us to
further our mission of transforming Native agriculture and food economies by delivering
creative capital, leading paradigm changes, and enhancing producer prosperity across
Indian Country. More specifically, these funds will be used to support operations,
increase access to capital for Native ag producers, and implement various strategies
designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of Akiptan’s programming.
“We are humbled by the generosity of MacKenzie Scott and empowered by Yield Giving’s belief in adding value by giving up control,” says Skya Ducheneaux, Executive Director of Akiptan.
Yield Giving has become known for its unique philanthropic approach in which it
unexpectedly distributes large financial gifts to nonprofit organizations. Their “Quiet
Research” process utilizes a small internal team that taps into a large network of
advisors to seek out nonprofits they want to support. Then they deliver monetary gifts
with only one expectation – that the nonprofit will use the funds the best way they see fit to benefit others.
“Just as Akiptan’s patient capital model provides Native ag producers with some extra financial breathing room, this Yield Giving gift provides us with the space we need to be intentional about determining our best path forward,” comments Skya.
Not only is this award a validation of Akiptan’s work, but it is also an acknowledgement
of the success of the Native community development financial institution (CDFI) model.
We hope that it will shed light on the innovative solutions being developed within Native
communities for Native communities.
