Layla Maynard is the spring Intern at Akiptan and is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. She has lived on the Cheyenne River Reservation her whole life and is currently a senior at the Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School. After high school she plans on attending college at Fort Lewis College in Durango Colorado and hopes to pursue her Business degree. Layla has worked at her mom’s restaurant Ubetcha Wateca as a cook and as ranch hand on her uncle’s ranch. While in school, Layla has participated in boxing, wrestling and volleyball. She has won two time ringside world champion for boxing, along with numerous other awards, she has been a two time LNI champ for wrestling, as well as made to state three times in wrestling as a freshman, for volleyball she received the Little Moreau Conference All Tournament Team. Layla is excited to learn more about Native agriculture finance at Akiptan, while also working on projects and tasks that will improve the youth programming for Native youth in agriculture.
